Why Otaru works as a rental
The number of guesthouses and minpaku in Otaru rose by more than 60% between 2019 and 2024, and one guesthouse reported being full from December to February, about 90% with overseas guests (Hokkaido Shimbun). Families use Otaru as a cheaper base for Kiroro and day trips to Sapporo, and summer brings the canal, the coast and Shakotan.
What older Otaru houses need
Many Otaru rentals are older wooden houses on slopes. That means heating that copes with January, snow on steep roofs and narrow lanes, and honest listings that sell the character rather than pretending to be new. We price and describe them that way.
Our own representative is renovating an older Otaru house for holiday rental, so we are working through the same questions as you.
Cover in Otaru
National guidance treats staff arriving in about 10 minutes as the norm for an unstaffed ryokan, and Otaru city's health centre sets the local standard. We confirm the requirement and a local partner for your address before we send an estimate. If we cannot cover it, we will say so.
